Papers [manuscript]. 1968-1974.

A collection of poems and letters written by Ian Mudie and addressed to his friend Os Watson, between 1968 and 1974. The first folder consists of letters written in 1968 (17 plus 22 poems) and 1969 (10 plus 31 poems). The second folder consists of letters written in 1970 (11 plus 14 poems), 1971 (2 plus 2 poems), 1972 (8 plus 5 poems), 1973 (10 plus 14 poems) and 1974 (4 plus 7 poems). The letters recount in great detail the source of inspiration for Mudie's poems which were enclosed in the letters; and represent one side of what was a lively and thoughtful exchange of literary criticism, discussions on choice of words and phrases in poems. Comments are passed on other writers, their works and on events such as the Adelaide Festival. Approximately half of the 120 Ian Mudie's poems appeared unaltered in Ian Mudie: selected poems, 1934-1974 (West Melbourne: Nelson, 1976) and Look, the kingfisher (Melbourne: Hawthorn Press, 1970). Of the remainder, some appeared in print in newspapers or literary journals.
